CES 2011: Chris Pirillo Interviews Jason Dunn

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 03:30 PM

This is an interview I did with Chris Pirillo from Lockergnome. I'm usually the one doing the interview, but this time around it was Chris asking me questions. Chris was at CES as part of the launch of Reese's Minis - which are, seriously, perhaps the most delicious chocolate candy I've ever eaten. I'm a complete sucker for peanut butter and chocolate together!

And this is also the first time I've published a video here where I'm in front of the camera. Be nice please. :-) It's not HD because the video was streaming live and they had to keep the data rate under 2mbps - CES might be technology heaven, but it's virtually impossible to get a fast, stable Internet connection of any kind from the CES show floor.

25 Minutes on the Motorola Atrix

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Android News" @ 11:24 PM

What's that? You're deeply curious about the Motorola Atrix announces at CES 2011? Then check out this 25 minute video all about the product. There's a lot of really interesting stuff about this product - we've seen the whole "take a small computer and put it in a dock and use it like a big computer" concept before, but this seems to be one of the more real-world applications. The only unfortunate thing about this video is the somewhat irritating nature of the questions the camera operating is asking - I feel sorry for the Motorola employees that had to put up with this guy. Still, it's worth watching.

CES 2011: Panasonic Viera Android Tablets

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Other Slates & Tablets" @ 09:00 AM

It seems like you couldn't go ten feet at CES without running into someone showing off an Android-based tablet - oh Microsoft, how could you not see this coming - but sometimes the popped up in surprising places. One such place was the Panasonic booth. Amidst giant 3D TVs, HD video cameras, and technology galore, were a series of three tablets: 10 inch, 7 inch, and 4 inch. Each of these tablets were prototypes; Panasonic isn't shipping these yet. They link up to Panasonic's on-board Viera software to do neat things like steam any video from the tablet to the TV. This type of integration is slick - check out out the video.

CES 2011: Dell's Press Conference Announcing the Dell Streak 7, Venue Phone, and Other New Hardware

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 04:00 PM

For full-screen viewing, click click on the video above and watch it on YouTube.

This is a video shot in Las Vegas at CES 2011, the Consumer Electronics Show. This is the first time the Dell Streak 7 has been officially unveiled, along with the Dell Venue, and the un-named 10 inch tablet. Other announced hardware includes a 3D version of the XPS 17 laptop, a new Alienware Aurora desktop PC, a new XPS 8300 desktop PC, and a few other odds and ends. The press conference was almost an hour long, so I tried to include only the interesting parts. Enjoy!

CES 2011: Dell Teases 10 Inch Tablet

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Dell Streak" @ 03:30 PM

Click over to the YouTube version for a full screen option.

I have a longer video of the Dell CES 2011 press conference coming up, but I wanted to put this short video out first: Dell has become known for showing an early prototype device for a few seconds at each of their CES press event, and true to form, they showed off a 10 inch tablet - it looked similar in design to the current generation of Dell Streak, but the focus seemed to be on business/enterprise use, so it might not ship under that brand. Nice to see Dell is fleshing out the tablet line-up though!

CES 2011: The Motorola Xoom Tablet

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Other Slates & Tablets" @ 03:00 PM

CES 2011 is the first event that Motorola is officially showing off their Xoom tablet at, and it looks like an impressive device. I wasn't able to get more than a few seconds of hands-on time with it, but the fit and finish was solid - I think this is going to be a real competitor to the iPad. The specs include:

  • Android 3.0 Honeycomb
  • 10.1 inch display
  • Dual Core 1 Ghz CPU NVIDIA Tegra 2
  • 1GB RAM
  • 32 GB inbuilt memory with microSD Card slot
  • 10 hr video playback battery life
  • 5 MP Rear camera with Flash and 720p HD video capture
  • 2MP video calling camera
  • Wifi(n) Bluetooth 2.1, 3G , 4G

CES 2011: The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Demo

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Other Laptops & Netbooks" @ 03:30 PM

This is a very brief demo of the Lenovo IdeaPad U1, an interesting tablet/laptop hybrid computer. The screen detaches and you have an Android 2.2-based tablet computer, and when you dock it with the main chassis, you have a full-fleged Windows 7 computer. I think it's great to see companies pushing the envelope of what's possible with computer designs like this - we need more of that in an industry where, all too often, companies are afraid to experiment in case they fail. My hat is off to Lenovo for stepping out with this design.

Engadget has further details on the product that, while originally was announces at CES 2010, seemed to become more official at CES 2011.

CES 2011: Heralding The Year of the Tablet

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Other Slates & Tablets" @ 10:30 PM

http://www.slashgear.com/ces-2011-a...nd-up-10125415/

"Every CES has its unofficial theme - we've seen netbooks and ereaders flood the booths in previous years - and 2011 was the turn of tablets. As predicted before the show, the rise of the iPad, the imminent release of Android 3.0 Honeycomb and the promise of a new, lucrative segment has worked like catnip to manufacturers large and small. Check out the SlashGear CES 2011 tablet roundup after the cut."

Android? QNX? Choices galore at this year's CES. Not many yet running Android 3.0, but the author's biggest surprise was the RIM PlayBook. He states that it, and maybe not the various Android incarnations, may eventually be the biggest competitor to the iPad. Touch screen, slide-out keyboard, docking keyboard, what's your fancy? Anyone have a prediction as to what (if anything) will ultimately provide true competition for the iPad? I personally think that the PlayBook will be amongst the leaders when it finally sees the light of day - providing that RIM develops the ecosystem needed for success.
