Hands-on with the Speedy Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G from Verizon

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Laptop Thoughts Talk" @ 10:00 AM

"By now, you should be familiar with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. We've done countless hands-ons with the super-svelte Honeycomb slate, and even reviewed it... twice! Now it's back, again, and this time its packing an LTE radio tuned to the frequencies of a little company known as Verizon. Outside of a few tiny cosmetic changes -- the brushed, gray plastic back and the rumored Micro SIM slot up top, nothing else has changed."

It appears, based on preliminary testing with this tablet, that Verizon's 4G is indeed super fast, with an average (repeatable) testing speed of 28+ Mbps downstream, and nearly 8Mbps upstream. Thunderbolt testing produced repeatable results of 44+ Mbps downstream, and 9+ Mbps upstream. Did I mention that this is fast?

If a compelling reason is needed to jettison existing hardware, software and carrier-relationship, this may be one! Now if only those pesky usage caps would disappear, or become more realistic.

The U.S. Wait for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Is Almost Over

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Other Slates & Tablets" @ 10:30 PM

"Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be on sale June 8 at Best Buy's Union Square store in New York City; everywhere else gets to wait until June 17."

If this sounds strangely like an Apple product launch, it tells me that the competition is finally learning how to compete with Apple. Limit initial sales, build up buzz (and demand) for a week or so, and then make sufficient quantities available to eager buyers, at a cost no higher than the competition. For WiFi versions, $499 for a 16GB version, and $599 for a 32GB version seem spot-on. With Honeycomb 3.1, 1280x800 resolution, up to 9-hours of battery life, and NVIDIA's 1GHz Tegra dual-core processor, 3-megapixel rear camera, and 2-megapixel front-facing camera, this may finally be a true iPad alternative.

In a nod perhaps to less tech-savvy consumers, Samsung promises all sorts of future software upgrades/enhancements, including their own TouchWiz UX, with many UI enhancements, including a 'task manager-like' utility, as well as a bunch of media-related apps. This may be what is needed to push Android more into the mainstreet. Oddly enough, no 3G or 4G versions are being reported. I do like the 7-inch Galaxy Tab, and it'll be interesting to see how its larger sibling performs with a real tablet OS.

File Transfer Problems with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Freebee

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android News" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/13/...-wont-work-wit/

"You know what's cool? Handing out 5,000 Android tablets to your most loyal developers at Google I/O. You know what's not cool? Handing out 5,000 Android tablets that can't have files loaded onto them. Believe or not, that's exactly what happened at this week's I/O conference, where hordes of developers were handed a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Limited Edition that cannot currently interface with OS X, and has a whale of a time doing so with Windows 7."

As mentioned above Google gave out a new, actually unreleased, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Honeycomb tablet to all the developers who attended the Google IO conference this past week. Unfortunately, it turns out it's not easy to connect them to a computer for file transfer. If you read the source article, including the update, you'll see they did find a way that works with Windows 7 or OS X but it's still not a quick an easy process. It does sound like some of the problem is the fact that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is not out yet and it's not recognized by software that is commonly used for this type of connection. Once that software is updated, hopefully soon, PC or Mac connectivity will be a non-issue. It's too bad someone at Google didn't do a little more testing with this before they gave out 5000 of these tablets. They could have at least give out instructions with it for connecting it to a computer.

First Hands-On: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 at Google I/O

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Other Slates & Tablets" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/...nds-on-from-go/

"Google just announced that every attendee of I/O 2011 would be getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Limited Edition, and being that we're here in both mind and body, we were able to get our paws around one just now. We're still looking for an unsaturated WiFi network to get things setup, but until the impressions roll in, we couldn't resist bringing you a first look at what's easily the most beautiful Galaxy Tab to date from a nerd's perspective."

It's here, and you can see a quick unboxing and features summary in the video within the main article. And in case you're curious about the color, here it is:

Are we seeing the emergence of the first Android tablet to truly be a competitor to the iPad 2? Google has also promised attendees a SIM card to slip into the 10.1, so this will be ATT/T-Mobile. I'm still trying to decide on my first non-iOS tablet, so this looks like a likely suspect!

Samsung Galaxy S II And Galaxy Tab 10.1 Officially Announced

Posted by Jason Lee in "Samsung Android Phones" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.samsungunpacked.com/pres...1_2_detail.html

And there you have it. As expected, Samsung has officially announced both the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The specs on both devices are absolutely amazing. For all the juicy details and more pictures check out the official press releases for the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Galaxy S II is due out this month in Europe and Asia and the Tab is slated for as soon as March. Now word yet on North American availability of course, those of us here will just have to wait and see. With out a doubt some one here will carry this device. The real question is, will you get one or both? As amazing as these devices are I have very little faith in Samsung (and AT&T) to not totally screw up the software and ruin a perfectly good Android experience.
