Gingerbread Updates Now Ready for Your Nexus One or Nexus S

Posted by Kevin Jackson in "Android News" @ 07:30 AM

Well looky here; just a couple of days after announcing that the 2.3.3 Gingerbread OTA update was coming for the Nexus One and Nexus S the zip files have shown up as well. For those of you (like me) who are too impatient to wait for the OTA, you can download the files from the following links:

Nexus One: FRG83G to GRI40

Nexus S: GRH78 to GRI40 or GRH78C to GRI40

Android Central has great step-by-step instructions for applying the update to the Nexus One. The only difference for the Nexus S is that you hold the volume rocker up when you power up in step 4.

I just applied the update to my N1. After the break I'll share my thoughts on the update process and my initial impression of the update.

Android Gmail App Updated, Pulled, And Then Updated Again

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android Software" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.androidcentral.com/minor...ate-hits-market

"A minor update to Android's Gmail app has hit the Market that fixes custom labels and improves copy/paste in Gingerbread."

Well that was quite the joy ride. A few days ago an update popped up in the Android Market for the official Gmail app. Not long after reports of crashing and other bad behavior caused Google to pull the update from the Market. Now today we find ourselves with an update to the last update that addresses these issues. Follow that? Great. Good news is that you can now head out to the Market and update your Gmail client and enjoy the ability to sync your custom label colors and your of you running Gingerbread get quicker access to select and copy text from emails. Any of you guys get burned by the crashing Gmail bug?

Angry Birds Update Released, Includes New Levels and Graphics Toggle

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android Software" @ 03:00 AM

http://androinica.com/2011/02/05/an...-episode-added/

"The ever popular puzzle game Angry Birds just got updated to version 1.51, and it seems to be a pretty major new release from the folks at Rovio Mobile in snowy Finland, Scandinavia."

Rovio has released an update for their super popular Angry Birds game. The 1.5 version includes 30 new levels, a toggle for lower end devices, and a wild west themed portion. Hopefully with this new update, users with less graphic intensive devices can enjoy the game as well. And watch for the Angry Birds commercial during the Super Bowl!

Nexus One And Nexus S Both Receive SMS Bug Fix

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android News" @ 08:00 PM

http://www.tmonews.com/2011/01/the-...or-is-it-nexii/

"Not to be outdone by the Samsung Vibrant update, both the Nexus one and Nexus S are received updates last night."

Just relax Nexus One owners... This isn't the update you're looking for. Samsung has reported that the 2.3.2 update currently rolling out to Nexus S users is to address the dreaded Android SMS bug. The Nexus One also received an update to Android 2.2.2. Without any official word from Google one can probably assume that the Nexus One update also addresses the same SMS bug. If you haven't received the OTA update yet and just can't wait (like me) follow the read link for download locations and instructions for both devices. I've updated my Nexus One and haven't' really noticed anything different but I had never experienced the SMS bug to begin with. Any Nexus owners out there had this update pushed out to them?

Samsung Vibrant Due To Get Froyo Tomorrow?

Posted by Jason Lee in "Samsung Android Phones" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,281...,2376045,00.asp

"An Android 2.2 upgrade for the Samsung Vibrant will roll out to subscribers starting on Jan. 21, T-Mobile's chief marketing officer Cole Brodman confirmed to PCMag today."

I suppose some would say, "It's about freakin' time!" T-Mobile has confirmed that the Android 2.2 update for the Vibrant will begin rolling out in waves starting January 21. Not everyone will get it the first day but they expect to have it pushed out to all users with in a few weeks. One interesting thing to note is that according to T-Mobile, Samsung gave them the base 2.2 update back in November. It has just taken this long for T-Mo to get all of their skins and bloatware mashed into the device. And people wonder why I refuse to buy carrier branded phones...

News On Two Anticipated Updates

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android Software" @ 03:30 PM

Two little news bits on upcoming updates: First, the bad news. The myTouch Slide Android 2.2 update will be delayed due to unreliable Wi-Fi calling and a misdirection of which partition to store the update. HTC is working on the issues but no release date is set yet. Second, the good news. The myTouch 3G 3.5mm Jack and myTouch Fender LE Android 2.2 Froyo updates will be released beginning January 12th with all customer's receiving their update by February 1st. This update has been desired by myTouch fans since the release of the myTouch 3G updates in October and December of last year. Finally, the wait is over!

Facebook For Android Updated: Now With Chat And Push Notifications!

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android Software" @ 10:00 AM

http://androinica.com/2010/12/14/fa...al-android-app/

"Facebook for Android has finally added Facebook chat to the official app. Now would be a good time for you to look out the window to double-check if the skies have fallen or playing host to a traffic jam of flying pigs."

Well, here's something no one expected. Facebook finally added chat support to the native Android client. I am not one to use Facebook chat but it is a nice option to have. As a note, I had trouble with it hanging a bit until it managed to enable Facebook chat on the desktop web site. And yes, if you have chat disabled on the desktop site opening it in the mobile app will sign you on the next time you launch the full web. Though you can choose to go offline from your phone. The only real problem I've found so far with it is that while it displays a notification in the bar it does not actually make any noise. So unless you are looking at your phone you don't see the chat message and if you don't notice it until your friend is offline you can't even see what they said. But hey, it's a good start. :) Any of you Facebook chat junkies jumping for joy right now?

Google Sneaks Similar/Related Tab Into Android Market

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android Software" @ 02:30 PM

http://androinica.com/2010/12/03/up...e-related-apps/

"When I went to the Android Market on my HTC Desire today to see what's new, I noticed that an additional tab called "Similar" had appeared next to the About and Comments tabs when viewing an app."

Well look at that. It appears that those code ninjas at Google managed to sneak yet another feature into Android Market without anyone noticing. *Poof!* This "Similar" tab is starting to show up an many Android 2.2 devices. Folks around the interwebs are reporting that if the tab isn't showing up for you yet that clearing the app data for Market will force it to show up. I found that simply clearing the app cache was enough to get it to show up. No need to blow away all the app data. One interesting thing to note, on my Nexus One the tab is actually called "Related". Regardless, it's nice to see yet another way to help us find really cool programs in the Android Market.

Update For The Nexus One Begins To Roll Out: Sadly Not The Gingerbread Man

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android News" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.androidcentral.com/nexus...not-gingerbread

"The Google Nexus One just got itself a little update. It's still Android 2.2.1 -- no Gingerbread yet, folks -- and the 1.3MB download looks to be a bunch of patches and bugfixes."

Okay, calm down folks. This isn't the update we've all been waiting for but perhaps it is and update to get us ready for the one we are really waiting for. The only thing I noticed was that the most recent Gmail update from the market is now in the ROM so I got that little bit of space back.

They guys over at Android Central have given the update a thorough tear down. They say it appears to touch almost every system application with larger updates for the Email app and Market. Most likely this is just a patch to get us ready for either the Market changes coming down the line and/or for the Gingerbread update. Let's hope this means we get a 2.3 update in the next week or so.

"Sorry kids, it looks like your mastery of Angry Birds will have to wait a little longer."

As if you could tear yourself away from the game Angry Birds! Well, now you will have even more reason for sleepless nights because the creators of Angry Birds have added 45 levels and support for QVGA graphics. Update (or if you haven't already, download the game) now and call off work tomorrow because there is no way you will get any sleep tonight!

The Gingerbread Man Cometh: The Nexus One Is Getting An Update "In The Next Few Days"

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android News" @ 12:00 PM

http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/07/an...read-nexus-one/

"Google had originally wanted to launch the Nexus Two device alongside Android 2.3, the next release of their mobile operating system, also known as "Gingerbread". That's not going to happen. The Nexus Two has been delayed. But it appears that Google is full steam ahead on the Gingerbread release."

What wonderful news to wake up to this morning! Will our beloved Nexus One's be getting a taste of Gingerbread this week? I certainly hope so! Far from being official, this news comes from one of the leadership team members of the Open Handset Alliance. So there is a chance that he has some idea of what might be going on. This lines up well with the rumored November 11th release date for the Gingerbread SDK. I'll for sure be keeping my fingers, toes, and antennae crossed. If you get an update in the coming days be sure to let us know.

Facebook for Android Update Is Coming

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Android Software" @ 12:00 PM

http://download.cnet.com/8301-2007_...0021660-12.html

"PALO ALTO, Calif.--Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg today may have disappointed some people who were hoping to see Facebook release a phone. "There are rumors out there that Facebook is building a phone," Zuckerberg said this morning at the company's mobile event at its headquarters. "No."However, Android and iPhone users will have something to look forward to. In addition to announcing platform changes, Zuckerberg shared some updates to Facebook for iPhone and Android. The iPhone app will be receiving Facebook Groups, which recently made its debut on the social network. Facebook Places, its listing service, is also getting updated, and will include geotagging. In addition, after you check in to a location with Places, you'll be able to add a photo."

Groups and Places will soon be coming to the Android version of Facebook's mobile application. Honestly Facebook for Android needs to step it up a bit - it's way behind iOS (And even Windows Phone 7) in looks and (some) functionality. Hopefully this update will be dropping quickly and we can start "placing" ourselves on the go!

Magical Rogers HTC Magic 2.1 Update Released!

Posted by Karey Westfall in "HTC Android Phones" @ 01:42 PM

http://www.iwantmyonepointsix.com/?p=347

"It's official. After more than a year, we are finally getting Android 2.1 for the Rogers HTC Magic."

So the 2.1 Android update is now available for the Rogers HTC Magic. That's wonderful for all of you Magic users out there - really, I am happy for you! But I want to know, when will I be updating my T-Mobile MyTouch? I last heard the update for the MyTouch would be out mid-summer. Looks like that will not be happening! But since the Magic and the MyTouch are very similar, hopefully we will be seeing an update soon for us MyTouch users out there! Come on T-Mobile, I want my update!
