Video Game Controls For Mobile Phones Arrives Via Xperia Play

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android Mobile Operators" @ 04:00 AM

"The Xperia Play, an Android-powered, gaming-optimized phone designed by Sony Ericsson, tries to bridge the gap between PlayStation games and the mobile platform. The Xperia Play's most significant feature is the inclusion of a slide-out DualShock controller-type set of controls, geared toward customers who find themselves carrying a handheld console along with their phone because they are disappointed by touchscreen-oriented mobile games and prefer the more precise experience of a controller."

Buttons, buttons and more buttons! The Xperia Play brings joysticks and analog pads to mobile phones! The Play should be out soon, but in the meantime take a look at all the features that it will offer!

Xperia Play, LG Revolution, and Droid X2 are on their way to Verizon

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android News" @ 07:00 AM

"Our friends at Verizon just reached out to share with us the upcoming May release schedule for a variety of new devices including the DROIDX2, LG Revolution, and Xperia Play."

It sounds like there is a good chance we'll be seeing three high-end Android Phones coming to Verizon this month. The Droid X2, LG Revolution, and the Xperia Play (PlayStation Phone). The Droid X2 has a Dual-Core Tegra 2 CPU/GPU which should give some excellent performance but this phone has no front facing camera. The LG Revolution uses a second generation Snapdragon and while it's single core, it should be no slouch, not to mention it has 4G. One major selling point of the LG Revolution is it will be the first Android Phone to support Netflix streaming. The Xperia Play comes with game emulators and a slide out game-pad with two analog controls as well as the other standard Playstation buttons and dpad.

Are you waiting for one of these three phones? I'm not sure which would be my pick. I'm not a fan of 4G since it doesn't make a difference most of the time and it hurts battery life, plus Verizon has had some issues with their LTE service. I love the idea of the Xperia Play but want to try one first and see what games are actually available for it once it's released. It will ship with Gingerbread so that's a plus. I like the sound of the Droid X2 with the Tegra 2, qHD LCD display, and 768MB of RAM, but I know the lack of a front facing camera would be a deal breaker for some. What are your thoughts?

A PlayStation in Your Pocket: The Sony Xperia Play

Posted by Kevin Jackson in "Android News" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/...ia-play-review/

"Yes, the Sony influence is strong with this one, and the Android Market will be joining the fun with Xperia Play-optimized titles from third-party developers. So all we really need to know now is whether the Android smartphone underpinning this smash-bang fusion of old and new school entertainment happens to be any good."

Check out this in-depth review of the coming "PlayStation Phone". The conclusion? A decent little device with its gamepad being its greatest strength, however one of its weaknesses is a lack of games and software optimized for it as well as a poor-quality screen and middle-of-the-road hardware specs.

Will the dearth of games be the death of this device before it even arrives or will we see more software and games by the time it hits the shelves? Do you plan to pick this up when it comes out later this year or is it just a novelty device for hard-core gamers?

The Release Of O2's Xperia Play Delayed Due To Buggy Software

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android Mobile Operators" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/25/...s-what-are-the/

"Oh, woe is us. Or, to be more precise, woe is us if we wanted the Xperia Play on the UK's O2 network on the day of its release, April 1st."

For all our UK friends out there - the Xperia Play's April 1st launch on the O2 network has been delayed due to software bugs. The bugs appear to be causing problems only for the O2 phones as Vodafone is planning on taking pre-orders by April 5th. But O2 is the only network that will carry the phone in white so you will have to wait if you want that color. The US version of the Play still is slated for a late spring release. Do you think the US version is having bug issues and that is causing a delay in a definite release date?
