AT&T Holding Back 4G Upload Speeds

"AT&T has admitted that it clipped the wings of its 4G network and is the reason that two recently released phones, the Motorola Atrix 4G and the HTC Inspire 4G, have dismal upload speeds."

This is bad. Sometimes I think Verizon is worse, sometimes AT&T. Verizon is pretty bad about installing useless applications like VZ Navigator and City ID but then AT&T pulls an Apple and won't let you install anything from anywhere except the Android Market. Anyway, it turns out AT&T went a step further and has restricted the upstream of their 4G phones to only 300kbps!!! I think it's kind of funny because my Verizon 3G phone gets faster upstream speeds than that and standard 3G HSPA is faster than EVDO Rev. A. In other words, you should get faster upstream speeds on an AT&T 3G phone than on an AT&T 4G phone. What are your thoughts? Any ideas about how we could change any of the silly things carriers do? I mean charges for texting and tethering are crazy and pure robbery. Peasant rebellion anyone?!?!? I don't know, sometimes I just feel like I'm sending lots of money every month to an enemy.

Today's Smartphone is Tomorrow's Laptop

". . . the Atrix does take one giant step towards allowing us to work and play without an x86-based desktop or laptop. By plugging the Atrix into the proprietary $400 laptop dock depicted here-which lacks a CPU or storage, and only has a chiclet keyboard, touchpad, battery (which automatically charges your phone), and an impressive 1366x768 screen."

Here is a review of the Motorola Atrix 4G from Maximum PC. A lot of ink has been spilled over the phone and its shortcomings, but one thing really stands out about this device; I believe that we are seeing the next generation of mobile computing. Smartphone processor speed is quickly catching up with many lower end laptops and netbooks (Netbook? What's that?) and with cloud storage becoming ubiquitous, it is only a matter of time before we slip our primary computer (at least the brains of it) into our pockets when we leave the office or the house. The Atrix 4G, with all its inadequacies, is just an early step in this convergence.

How about you: will you give up your laptop for a smartphone and a dock? Let us know if the forum.
