abroadband: Data Access for Travellers

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.abroadband.com/

My friend Rafe Blanford pointed out this service, which I hadn't heard of until now. It looks interesting - at current rates, it's about 86 cents USD/CAD per MB, and they support SIMs, microSIMs, and USB sticks. That's not "I'm going to order a TV season on iTunes and download it all" cheap, but if you were careful about not downloading email attachments and were sparing with your Internet access, you could make a $40 investment last a week or two. While you can check your online balance easily, it seems this isn't a true pre-pay solution...the metre keeps running without stopping, so be careful what you decide to download.

Note that this is for data only: this is for your laptop, tablet, or I-only-want-Internet-phone. If you want to use your phone abroad and do voice calls, text, etc. you'll need to get a SIM from a wireless carrier. Anyone know of a service similar to this but for full phone service?

T-Mobile Revamps Their Data Plans: Time To Get Your "4G" On

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android Mobile Operators" @ 03:30 PM

http://www.tmonews.com/2011/03/t-mo...bconnect-plans/

"We had some pretty good indications that T-Mobile would be unveiling some revamped webConnect data plans today and they have gone and done just that."

T-Mobile has just updated their data plan offerings and I must say it is nice to see larger data pools being offered what with all the tablets and such coming this year. Each plan comes it a bit above the current AT&T equivalent but if you have a voice plan along with your data plan there is a 20% discount for the data. That will bring these plans in a slightly under the cost of an AT&T plan if you have voice service. Any T-Mo customers out there planning on taking advantage of one of these new plans or are you staying right were you are?

Sprint Ups Data Rates by $10/Months on New Smartphone Plans

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone News" @ 10:15 AM

http://hothardware.com/News/Sprint-...emium-Data-Fee/

"Ruh roh Shaggy, get ready to fork over an extra $10/month to Sprint to cover the wireless service provider's "Premium Data add-on charge to activations of smartphones." But don't worry, the additional funds coming out of your pocket is how Sprint shows it's "committed to providing its customers a great wireless experience now and in the future." Does that help ease the sting?"

This is going the wrong way - if carriers want more customers to get on board with ARPU-boosting data plans, they've got to get cheaper, not more expensive. Unless of course, due to spectrum constraints and an inability to actually cope with the data usage happening today, carriers like Sprint don't particularly want hordes of new customers signing up. I find that hard to believe - data service plans are one of the few areas of new growth for wireless carriers based on what I read.

Price Comparison Chart For the Samsung Galaxy Tab

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android Slates/Tablets & Accessories" @ 03:30 PM

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,281...,2372723,00.asp

"The Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet will soon be available on five major carriers in the U.S., and while the various models aren't the same, they're similar enough to give similar experiences. They're all priced differently, so if you're interested in an Android tablet, take a look at our chart."

Hopefully, this price comparison chart will help you decide where to buy your Samsung Galaxy Tab. The chart shows pricing for the Tab with a two year agreement or no contract, as well as the cost of data over two years. Depending on how much data you will use with the device, you may profit more by going with a different carrier than you normally use.
