Google and Samsung Announce Ice Cream Sandwich and the Galaxy Nexus

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android News" @ 10:30 AM

"Google just unveiled their new Nexus phone, the Galaxy Nexus, along with a preview of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, coming to phones next year. Here's a look at the creamy new update to the Android operating system."

Yesterday Google introduced the newest version of Android, version 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. Along with Google, Samsung was there to unveil the newest Nexus phone, the Galaxy Nexus. Ice Cream Sandwich has been anticipated for quite a while now. It's the first version of Android to combine the phone (under version 3) and tablet (version 3.x) versions of the Android OS back into one version 4.0 for both form factors. In doing that Google has brought a number of features and UI characteristics from the tablet version over for Android phones to use as well. They redesigned a lot of the interface and added tons of new features like Face Unlock and new app level data usage details and controls. Follow the "Read" link to see more of the new features.

I love the look of Ice Cream Sandwich. They say they revamped the UI and while it still looks like Android it does look cleaner and better. I'm glad they brought things like stacks and scrollable widgets over from Honeycomb. I also love their phone implementation of the Honeycomb multitasking interface.

Don't forget to check out the latest Nexus phone - the Galaxy Nexus. It's a high-end phone for sure with 1GB of RAM, a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, huge 720x1280 4.65" Super AMOLED display, a barometer, NFC, and most everything else you would expect. Some will be disappointed that the rear camera is only 5MP or by the lack of a microSD card slot. The Galaxy Nexus will be available in November.

Google To Unveil Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, Oct. 18 in Hong Kong

"If you recall, the event was planned for two days ago, but was postponed—the official line being that it was out of respect for the passing of Steve."

Google has announced that Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, will be announced in Hong Kong on Oct. 18 at 10:00pm Eastern time. This location may sound odd to you but it also happens to be where Google's Andy Rubin was scheduled to speak before the date was moved. You can watch the event live on YouTube. Along with Google at the event will be Samsung to show off their new Galaxy Nexus/Droid Prime/Droid Nexus/Nexus Prime that's designed to run the new OS. Ice Cream Sandwich will be the first version of Android to combine the phone version of Android withe the tablet version of Android. I can't wait to see what other changes are on the way!

Google Nexus Tablet Coming This Summer?!

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android Slates/Tablets & Accessories" @ 12:00 PM

"Google is reportedly working with LG on a new self-branded device, only this time it's a tablet rather than a smartphone. The "Google Nexus Tablet" (name not confirmed, mind) will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb and, according to Mobile-Review, is expected to launch in mid-summer or early fall."

So... Not even a day after I buy a Xoom. Typical. The current buzz is that Google is working directly with LG to produce the next Google branded device, in this case a tablet. The Nexus Tablet if you will. It should be the biggest and the baddest Honeycomb tablet around with the latest software from Google and the sweetest hardware from LG. Not only that, it is due by this summer or early fall! I for one am excited. I hope there is a wifi only version that I'll be able to pick up somewhere for not to horrible a price. Any of you tablet hold outs (that didn't just buy a Xoom *grumbles*) think you might pick up the official Nexus Tablet if/when it is launched?

Nexus One Getting Gingerbread OTA Update Soon

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android News" @ 07:30 AM

"Now, I have a pretty good idea that pretty much every Nexus One owner out there is overly eager for the Android 2.3 (aka Gingerbread) update to be pushed to their handsets. And now, in lieu of an actual date, we have a vague idea of the kind of wait you’re in for. According to Google’s Nexus Twitter account, you Nexus One owners will get the update “in the coming weeks.”"

This is obviously good news if you have a Nexus One. I think it's good news for other Android owners as well since its release on the Nexus One, to me, represents the first step in Gingerbread getting released for all devices. Hopefully this will put the pressure on OEMs to finish earlier updates for those who still do not have Froyo.

Are there any Nexus S users out there who would like to share favorite changes they've noticed with Gingerbread?

48 Hours With a Nexus S

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Android Talk" @ 07:00 AM

It got here around 48 hours ago, and I've got some interesting observations on the newest Nexus phone. So how does the gingerbready goodness stack up to the bar set by it's older brother, the Nexus One? Well let's talk about it in my Micro-Review-Quick-Look! Read more...
