The Asus Eee PC Transformer: This Thing Looks Killer!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Laptop Thoughts Talk" @ 02:00 PM

I can't say much for Asus' marketing tag line on the Transformer - "My Multiple Life, I decide" sounds like a bad translation of bottle of Chinese bipolar disorder drug - but the device itself is shaping up to me quite impressive...at least on paper. It has all of the standard goodness that we've come to expect from a modern Android tablet - the NVIDIA Tegra 2 1 Ghz dual-core CPU, 1080p playback support, a nice 10.1 inch IPS display running 1280 x 800 resolution, 16 Gb or 32 GB of storage, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a 5 megapixel rear camera and a 1.2 megapixel front camera, and the usual assortment of sensors (G-Sensor, Light, Gyroscope, E-Compass, GPS).

What's really interesting about the Transformer is the fact that it docks with a keyboard that takes the 9.5 hour battery run-time and boosts it to an impressive 16 hours. If those are real numbers, and not inflated marketing numbers, this tablet will be an amazing breakthrough for people who need a device with incredible endurance. The fact that it has two USB ports, and an SD card reader in the keyboard base station, make it all the more tempting.

The best hardware in the world though won't make up for a lack of tablet-friendly applications, and based on my experience so far with the Motorola XOOM, this is a significant problem. I can only hope that as more Android 3.0 tablets come to market, developers will take note and gear up their coding efforts.

Is Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) a Failure?

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Other Slates & Tablets" @ 12:00 AM

http://blog.laptopmag.com/honeycomb...ile+Technology)

"You can blame the high price. Or that it's heavier and thicker than the iPad 2. Or the lack of 4G at launch. Whatever the reason, according to Deutsche Bank, Motorola has sold only 100,000 Xooms since it and Verizon Wireless debuted the first Android 3.0 (a.k.a. Honeycomb) tablet in late February. Meanwhile, a DigiTimes report claims that Apple sold 2.6 million iPad 2 tablets in the month of March. Yes, all of the above factors come into play, but it's also very possible that consumers just aren't excited about Honeycomb."

An estimated 2.6 million iPad 2 devices were sold in March 2011, while Motorola's Xoom has sold about 100,000 devices in total. LAPTOP cites a handful of possible reasons why this has happened, but the bottom line seems to be that Honeycomb just doesn't match the simplicity of the iPad 2, in other words, it's too hard for the mythical 'average user' to figure out. One Xoom user was quoted as saying “I honestly found it one of the most painful experiences of any ‘modern’ device I’ve used in literally years. Terrible is my only adjective.” Google has started working with vendors on customizations, to address some of the concerns (or shortcomings), but did state that vendors are free to tweak as (much as) needed. Of course, the inevitable statistic about available apps has re-surfaced, with Honeycomb offering about 50 apps, while the iPad 2 number is around 65,000 and even the PlayBook number is about 3,000. It's catch-22, as software developers won't write software (or port existing code) to Honeycomb if they don't see a market, and the market won't develop if there is a lack of quality apps. So, is Honeycomb a failure? I'd say no, but it has disappointed so far - users expected more at launch.

T-Mobile Announces The T-Mobile G-Slate With Google By LG For You

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android Slates/Tablets & Accessories" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.tmonews.com/2011/02/t-mo...h-google-by-lg/

"Just hours ago T-Mobile teased an image of a traditional pair of 3D glasses. Why did they do such a thing? Because tonight they are officially announcing the T-Mobile G-Slate with Google by LG that has, you guessed it plenty of 3D capability!"

Rumors have been flying since we were teased with the "T-Mobile G-Slate with Google by LG" back at CES. Many of those rumors involved the device having a 3D screen. Well, it appears that those rumors were true. The G-Slate supports an 8.9-inch 3D capable screen and even has the ability to capture 3D and HD content with its dual rear facing cameras. If that weren't enough the G-Slate is powered by a dual core Tegra 2, has 32GBs of memory built in, an HDMI out port, and will be available "this spring". If you just can't get enough of this sweet new device T-Mobile has put up a sigh-up page so you can get the latest and greatest info as it becomes available. Anyone else out there think this baby looks cooler than the Xoom?
