HP's ePrint Service Offers Tighter Security For Mobile Printing

"HP has webOS, Google has Android. Aside from running those competing mobile operating systems, the two companies will fight to see who has the better wireless printing solution."

Starting May 1st, HP will be releasing it's own ePrint Service allowing Android users to print directly from their phones to a nearby printer. HP's printing service will have tighter security than Google's Cloud Print because it will require the users to enter a code from their device directly on the printer before the print job is started. This feature would be good for higher security documents but bad for the common users. But it sounds like HP will be marketing it's ePrint to business anyways since it will allow for the printing of documents, emails and presentations from Android devices. As of now, no price has been set for the service.

Google Cloud Print Enters Beta: Chance Of Rain Up 30%

"Back in April, we wrote about a very cool new feature that Google was working on alongside Chrome OS: Cloud Print. Essentially, it's a service that takes all of the printer drivers you normally need on a computer and puts them in the cloud (on Google's servers). This way, you can easily print from a machine regardless of the OS. This means you can print from Chrome OS or from any mobile device."

Printing from my phone was something I did quite a bit back in my Windows Mobile days, at work anyway. I don't actually own an printer myself. Back then printing was accomplished over IR or Bluetooth. Now thanks to Google we will soon be able to print over the interwebs from anywhere. I really only see this being useful if someone were to share their printer with you. If I am in a position to pick up a print job from my own printer I might as well just print from the computer it is attached to. If you want to try it out you'll have to download the latest dev build of Google Chrome. Anyone played with this yet?
