Google Maps 5.8 Released with Improved "Places" Features

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android Software" @ 10:00 AM

http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/20...le+Mobile+Blog)

"When deciding on a place to go, people often want to know what a place looks like in addition to seeing ratings and reviews. You can now contribute photos to help others get a sense of places. You can now attach your photos to Places, and yours may even become the profile picture for that page."

Google has added a number of social features to Maps. As mentioned above it will now let you add your own photo of a place. New descriptive terms will also show up when you search for a place. You can add places if the one you're looking for doesn't exist. So now you can check in anywhere - even when the place isn't listed. Make sure you check the source for all the details but there is a lot here - especially for people who love to explore and try new destinations! Google Maps 5.8 for Android is compatible with Android 2.1 and newer. Have you been playing with any of the new features? Let us know what you think!

New Google Maps 5.3: Now With Location History And Check-ins For Homebodies

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android Software" @ 03:00 PM

http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/20...hboard-and.html

"Today, we're happy to announce Google Maps 5.3 for Android, which lets you see your Google Location History dashboard, check in at "home," and add your own aspects for places when rating them."

Google just keeps the cool features coming. The latest update to Google Maps for Android adds the ability to view your location history much like on the "Dashboard" view you get on your desktop. Another super welcome feature is the ability to check-in at home. Something I've personally missed. I can do it on Facebook... but I don't like Facebook. :) They've also added the ability for you to add custom fields to your reviews when rating places on.. well.. Places. Not sure I'll use this last option much but it's nice to have if say some place has really awesome salsa and I want to let everyone know. If you haven't already fire up the Market and get your update!

Facebook for Android Update Is Coming

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Android Software" @ 12:00 PM

http://download.cnet.com/8301-2007_...0021660-12.html

"PALO ALTO, Calif.--Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg today may have disappointed some people who were hoping to see Facebook release a phone. "There are rumors out there that Facebook is building a phone," Zuckerberg said this morning at the company's mobile event at its headquarters. "No."However, Android and iPhone users will have something to look forward to. In addition to announcing platform changes, Zuckerberg shared some updates to Facebook for iPhone and Android. The iPhone app will be receiving Facebook Groups, which recently made its debut on the social network. Facebook Places, its listing service, is also getting updated, and will include geotagging. In addition, after you check in to a location with Places, you'll be able to add a photo."

Groups and Places will soon be coming to the Android version of Facebook's mobile application. Honestly Facebook for Android needs to step it up a bit - it's way behind iOS (And even Windows Phone 7) in looks and (some) functionality. Hopefully this update will be dropping quickly and we can start "placing" ourselves on the go!

Google Maps Hits Version 4.6: Updated Reviews, Search Filtering, And Real-Time Stalking

Posted by Jason Lee in "Android Software" @ 11:30 AM

http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/20...id-updated.html

"Lately, we've been working on giving you even better ways to find nearby places with Google Maps for Android, such as the Places icon and rich Place pages. Today, we are launching Google Maps 4.6 with a new design for Place page reviews, more options to filter search results, and a Google Latitude real-time updating option."

This latest update to Google Maps brings some very nice features to the Places portion of the program. Search results can now be filtered down in several ways. You can choose to restrict the distance away from your location, rating level, or even if the joint is open now. All very nice features when you are out and about in strange lands looking for a bite to eat.

The feature I am most excited about it the experimental real-time updating option in Latitude. This feature allows you to select one of your Latitude friends and enable "real-time" location poling for the next 15, 30, or 60 minutes. It turns their map marker orange and gives you darn near instant location updates. Well, much faster than the 5-20 minute updates you normally get. This is a great feature if you were actually trying to meet up with said person. Unfortunately it requires both users to have Google Maps 4.6 and Android 2.2+ so you may be limited on who you can use it with at the moment. Still a very nice feature.
