Instagram Update Adds Better Tablet Support and App2SD

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android Software" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/06/...pdated-tablets/

"The latest one to hit today (1.0.3) promises expanded support for tablets and WiFi handsets, app installation on the SD card for storage-limited users and fixing an audio mute bug during capture."

I'm not sure I can think of an App, maybe Angry Birds, that had as much hype as Instagram. Those who use Instagram seem to love it and that number grew a lot last week when it was finally released for Android. With the latest version including better tablet support and support for App2SD I'm sure the number of users will grow even more.

It's great to see a developer not just putting their product out there but responding so quickly to what people want and quickly releasing updates that address the issues.

New Skype for Android Sends Photos and Video

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android Software" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/13/...-video-and-oth/

"Just in time to really annoy your family and friends with holiday greetings, Skype for Android has updated to version 2.6, bringing with it support for sharing photos, videos and other files with your contacts."

Just in case you didn't have enough options to share a picture of your Christmas tree with mom and dad you can now use Skype for this and more. The latest release of Skype for Android lets you send photos, videos, and even other files to your contacts. They also have improved video quality for Tegra 2 based devices and added support for more devices like the Droid RAZR. Do you use Skype often? If so, what do you think of the new version?

Check the Buzz Near You with Proximitips

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android Software" @ 11:00 AM

"Proximitips is yet another addition to the long list of aforementioned apps that brings a brand new concept of providing localized social media content to you in the form of a virtual magazine! By localized, we mean accessing only the content shared by people (including you) in your vicinity through said services. With Proximitips, you get maps, tweets, next door stuff (local multimedia sharing), bookings to your favorite venues and more."

Proximitips is a social media aggregator that gets its data from all the major social networks. It tweets, facebook posts, and other information based on your location. You can change the distance from you that it will consider to be near you. You can filter information based on categories like check-ins, events, or music. It also has a feature that lets you make reservations at hotels, restaurants, etc. It looks like a very useful tool if you're traveling and want to find something to do. Check out the source link for more details or download Proximitips from the Android Market and give it a try!

Group Sharing Service Posterous Releases App for Android

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Windows Phone Software" @ 07:00 AM

"Posterous has announced updates to its mobile apps, for both iOS and Android. The updated versions of the apps bring support for creating and managing Posterous Groups, which is an email list-like service that can be used either as a traditional email list, or as a group sharing service."

I was not familiar with Posterous. It looks like a great new-school list server service. While it does group emails it also makes it easy to share documents, photos, and more on a web site. Posterous will automatically re-size photos, convert video, and embed documents to make sharing your information painless. Since I do most of my email and messaging in Android these days if I was going to manage a communication tool like this it would be great to do so from an app. Now that can be done! Do you use Posterous? If so, let us know what you think of the service and the app?

Google Maps Gets More Social

Posted by Kevin Jackson in "Android Software" @ 06:00 AM

"You can now also invite Latitude friends to check in at Hotpot locales by sending them a request directly from the app. In other words, if you don't feel like actually texting or calling somebody to ask them to meet you at Starbucks, you can just check in there with Latitude and have the app start nagging them for you."

I'll admit that I haven't gotten into Latitude or Hotpot (a.k.a. Places) much, so this update doesn't add much new for me, but it seems like it could be a cool new feature for some. Is this something that you see yourself using?

Foursquare for Android Does Comments, Photos, & Widgets

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android Software" @ 08:00 AM

http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2...-home-screen-w/

"Foursquare got a pretty big update for the iPhone earlier in the week, but no body puts Android in the corner! Foursquare has added photos and comments to its Android app, just like the iPhone update, giving you the option of attaching a picture to your check-ins and commenting on others. Check-in history has also made the cut, so you can see where you've been complete with comments and photos."

They've also added widgets so you can check-in or view others check-ins without launching the app. One of my favorite features of the Android OS is the widget. I'm always glad to see developers utilize this valuable tool. If you're a Foursquare user this is an update you'll probably want whether you like widgets or not!
